Sinus Headache Treatment - Number of Ways by Which Sinus Headaches Can Be Treated

Air-filled cavities in the forehead, cheekbones, and at the back of the bridge of the nose are called sinuses. Thin mucus is produced by the sinus that drains out of the canal of the nose. When a sinus becomes inflamed, due to an allergic reaction, a tumor, or an infection, the inflammation will thwart the steady flow of mucus and this results in a pain akin to that of a headache.

In order to treat the sinus headache, the primary sinusitis inflammation has to be treated. Treatment can involve using humidifier, and other natural remedies to clear the sinusitis. If the infection is due to bacteria then antibiotics are given to clear the infection. A short period of antihistamines such as Benadryl or decongestants such as Sudafed is given to treat the symptoms. If the pain still persists then corticosteroids are prescribed to reduce the inflammation. When an allergen is causing the sinusitis break out preventive allergy therapy is used.

The problems which may occur with acute sinusitis may include cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, headache, green nasal discharge, and postnasal drip. When the sinusitis infection lasts for twelve or more weeks it is known as chronic sinusitis and can have added problems such as loss of sense of taste and smell and fatigue may also be experienced. Other symptoms may also occur depending on which sinus cavity that the infection lies in.

A sinusitis infection may start off with common cold symptoms such as runny nose, cough, and congestion. But when it is not handled right away, it can lead to much more severe problems.

There are many different treatments which are meant to clear up the sinusitis and the problems which occur with it. It is important to find the treatment that works best for you and to treat the sinusitis before it worsens and surgery is then left as the only option.

As is the case with other anatomical obstructions in the nasal cavities such as swollen turbinates or cysts, nasal polyps often cause blockage and can result in chronic sinus infections. Sinus sufferers should consult their physicians and have them determine if they have nasal or sinus polyps, and seek appropriate treatment. Fortunately nasal polyps can often be treated successfully with medications alone and surgery is not always a necessity.

Sinusitis is generally caused by a cold or an allergy. When a cold or allergy takes place, swelling of the sinus cavity lining occurs. When bacteria enter the sinus cavities, they attack the swollen lining which then causes greater inflammation. The cilia usually flushes out the bacteria and mucus. When this amount of inflammation occurs, the cilia can no longer function as it should and so the bacteria and mucus end up becoming trapped in the cavities and as a result the sinusitis infection begins.

Nasal polyps are often described as looking like some sort of rounded grape-like growth. Adding obstructions inside the nose, polyps can block the drainage passageways and therefore result in bacteria growth and infection. Polyps that develop in other parts of the body can become cancerous, but in general that is not the case with nasal polyps. Normally doctors do not seek biopsies when treating polyps in the nasal and sinus cavities.

Doctors conduct test to ascertain whether the headache is sinus headache or it is migraine or tension headache. Physical examination for congestion, transillumination i.e. shining a light through the sinuses or in some cases x-rays, a CT scan, or an MRI is done to check for sinusitis.

Sometimes surgical drain of the mucous in the sinuses is also done to clear the inflammation. Alternative treatments like natural remedies, acupuncture and homeopathic medication are also given to treat sinus headaches. Even nasal steroid therapy is used to bring relief and clear inflammation.

There are numerous medications and treatments meant to help relive the problems that the sinusitis brings to the sufferer. One of the most common treatments is oral medications such as antibiotics, decongestants, and anti-fungals. Oral medications work on infections and other problems by traveling through the blood stream to the infected area. In the sinus cavities there are very few blood vessels. Since the oral medications use the blood stream to flow to the area where they are needed, only a small amount of the medication can be delivered to the sinusitis infection which may lead to little or no relief from the treatment. Also since these medications use the blood stream, it then is distributed through out the rest of the body also which can lead to many side effects such as stomach pain, drowsiness, amongst many others depending on which type of medication is being used.

A newer treatment that is used nasally is aerosolized medications. Aerosolized medications are used very much like nebulized asthma medications. These antibiotics, anti-fungals, and anti-inflammatories are broken down into a small particle size so that it can pass the inflammation and make its way up to the sinusitis infection. Generally a small amount of these medications are used which results in little to no side effects in the rest of the body.

Nasal polyps are a well known cause of sinus pressure and pain and occur in the nasal and sinus passages of many people. Chronic sinus sufferers may have anatomical obstructions in their nasal and sinus cavities, and nasal polyps are one of the most common of these. This article will briefly discuss the causes and effects of having nasal polyps.

Allergies are a result of an overactive immune system. Your immune system is able to identify and destroy many foreign invaders that could potentially harm you. Your immune system can also identify cells that are infected internally with viruses. It does this work to keep your body healthy. Allergies are your bodies reactions to allergens such as dust, mold, pollen, pet dander, etc., which are usually harmless to most people. The allergic immune system misidentifies un-harmful substances as harmful, and then fiercely attacks these substances. These attacks can create problems which may range from mildly inconvenient and uncomfortable, to extremely severe.

Doctors are not 100% certain what the precise causes of nasal polyps are. In general it is thought that chronic inflammation in the nasal cavities can cause polyps to grow, often resulting in blockage of the sinus passages and resulting in infections. In addition, it appears that aspirin intolerance also seems to increase the likelihood of nasal polyps. Men over 40 years of age are more prone to develop polyps than are women or people in other age groups, unless asthma is a concurrent condition. It is not believed that allergies are the main cause of polyp growth since they occur in just as many people who do not have nasal allergies as in those who do.

Headache pain can be stifling, often incapacitating and certainly a handicap when suffering from chronic headaches. The most common types of headaches, including migraine headaches, are caused when blood vessels surrounding the eyes and forehead begin to spasm. High blood sugar levels typically from sweets or alcohol, high hormone levels surrounding the monthly cycle in females along with stress hormones produced in the adrenal glands, can trigger a migraine attack. Sinol is the all natural headache remedy you need to quickly relieve your headache symptoms. The capsaicin in Sinol relaxes the blood vessels to quickly relieve your headache pain in minutes. Because Sinol is all Natural it can be used liberally. Sinol works best when headache symptoms first occur. For powerful headaches you may have to spray 2-3 times in each nostril. Most headaches will subside in under 20 minutes.

Nasal polyps can often be controlled using mediations, especially corticosteroid medications like prednisone or steroid sprays. If the polyps cannot be controlled by medication, surgery might be necessary. In some patients who have polyps, no blockage occurs and in such cases many doctors will choose to forego surgery. Unfortunately, polyps have a strong tendency to return after they have been surgically removed.

Polyps are not a separate growth, as is a tumor, and they consist of the same tissue as does their surrounding areas. The polyp tissue can contain cilia and secrete mucous, but sometimes the tissue hardens and flattens and the cilia are lost due to chronic infection or from being irritated by constant exposure to the nasal air stream.

Some physicians say that polyps are more likely to grow in people who also suffer from asthma. Dr. M. Lee Williams in his book entitled 'The Sinusitis Help Book' writes: 'It is often surprising how many asthmatics with sinusitis already have, or eventually go on to develop, nasal or sinus polyps, and how much improvement in their asthma may sometimes result from removing the polyps and clearing up their obstructive sinus disease.' He continues: 'Unfortunately, even after polyps have been removed, more than one-third of the patients with nasal polyps will have a recurrence of them, and this is especially true for those with superimposed allergy, frequent sinus infections, repeated colds, asthma, cystic fibrosis, or aspirin intolerance.'

There are also many treatments which are directly distributed into the sinus cavities. These treatments are generally meant to help moisten the cilia so that it can flush out the trapped mucus and bacteria. Nasal sprays are commonly used and can be prescribed or purchased over the counter. The nasal sprays may offer some relief to the lower part of the sinuses but often times may not help the infection since their particle sizes are too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to the sinusitis infection. The same holds true for a treatment called irrigation which distributes saline up to the sinus cavities. Irrigation is also very messy and generally unsuccessful in offering relief.

It should be noted that nasal irrigation is not recommended for people with nasal polyps. This is because the pressure from the nasal irrigation procedure can be traumatic in that the fluid stream of saline solution would be pushing against the sensitive and exposed tissue of the polyp.

Usually makes the pain becomes worse when you bend down or lean over, as does cold and damp weather. Sinus headaches are often worse in the morning and better by afternoon. Sinus headaches are associated with a deep and constant pain in the cheekbones, forehead, or bridge of the nose. The pain usually increases with abrupt head movement or straining. Other sinus symptoms, such as nasal discharge, feeling of fullness in the ears, fever, and facial swelling come along with this pain.
